Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is included in the rate?

    • Daily servicing of the rooms.
    • Sufficient wood is provided at each of the fireplaces and fire pits for conventional usage during your stay.
    • Sufficient ice for your drinks will be provided, If you’d like additional ice for cool boxes, in your bedroom, or at the pool, you can order this at the lodges.

  • Do we have exclusive use of the Lodge?

A minimum booking of 4 bedrooms (or rand equivalent) will give you exclusive use of the relevant lodges. Tudor Cottage is a standalone building on an acre of ground. There are no shared communal areas.

Should you wish to make use of both the lodges when booked all 10 rooms, there will be an extra charge.

  • Are there braais?

Bring along your favorite braai and potjie recipes. Several braai’s are located at the lodges, summerhouse and sundowner spots. A No 3 potjie pot is available for your use along with fittings for a gas bottle as well as a stand if you want to cook over a wood fire.

There is a pizza oven at the Heys lodge boma.

Both lodges and the cottage have gas braais on the veranda. There are wood braais in all the bomas.

  • What should I bring to Heysbrook?

    • Packing a warm jacket is always prudent.

Situated on the escarpment dividing the highveld and the lowveld, the lodge is at 1200m above sea level with the highest point in the mountains at 2000m. The days are warm (can get up to the mid 30’s) and with the prevailing wind coming down the valley, the evenings cool down to a more comfortable temperature. Winter temperatures see us having mild to warm days and bracing evenings.

    • Bring your comfortable walking shoes and your mountain bike

There are numerous maintained trails – and many more to be forged – over the 1300ha estate. The estate is safe to explore on foot or bike, though the resident wildlife should please be given the respect they deserve. They are after all full-time residents.

Maintained trails include the Paschner mine walk, Biggest- Kiepersol-in-the-world walk, Bakoni ruins meander, Plattekop climb and the Postal path cycle path.

    • Bring enough food for your group & maybe your favorite knife

The kitchens are fully equipped with all the necessary crockery, cutlery, glasses, and appliances and a number of pantry cupboards for your food as well as bar fridges for your drinks. At Heys Lodge there is a large chest freezer and walk-in fridge. Forest Lodge has two large double door fridges for your use.

  • Is there a coffee machine?

Yes - Pack your favorite Nespresso pods. There are Nespresso machines available for your use as well as plungers for ground coffee.

  • Can we bring our pets?

We are pet friendly for friendly dogs.

Please bring bedding, bowls and cleaning towels for your pet. Cleaning or replacement caused by your dogs will be for your account.  Both Heys Lodge and Bakoni Forest Lodge are not fenced, and cognisance must be taken of our wildlife.  Tudor Cottage is fenced. Watch out for ticks in summer.

  • What is the road like?

There are two and a half km’s of dirt road from the N4 to the lodge. The road is stony and uneven though is traversable in a conventional sedan with reasonable ground clearance. If you have low profile tyres, drive with caution. Please take an easy drive and enjoy the scenery.

  • Is this a malaria area?

Being on the Mpumalanga escarpment, this is not a malaria area.

  • Is there an option for catered meals?

We are able to do catered meals that are ordered in advance. Not having a restaurant, there are meal options available that can be made for the groups.

  • Where can we get supplies?

We are 10km’s from Waterval Boven where there is a shop for very basic supplies. A Spar is available at Ngodwana which is a further 40km’s from the estate. Our advice is to bring all supplies for your stay so that you do not have to venture out anywhere.

  • What is there to do?

There is plenty of space for outdoor games & indoor entertainment. Board games and jigsaw puzzles are available to while away the lazy days.

At the Melrose Summer House, there is a basketball loop as well as a trampoline, along with lots of open space for a game of boulle, hide-and-seek or catchers. This area is only available to Heys Lodge guests.

Bakoni Forest Lodge has an infinity pool as well as a large front garden area and a number of verandas.

Take a look at our See & Do page for other adventures in and around the estate.
